"If you have to choose ONE resource from all those available for studying the history, philosophy, geography, theology, politics and sociology of the Bible, THIS video is the one. I'm a guide and teacher in Israel, and this video is the single best resource I know. I view it repeatedly. When I first saw it I had already been working in Israel, Jordan and Egypt for ten years, and I was often frustrated when I tried to find clear themes for teaching my students and clients. There is so much in this land, old and new, it can be very confusing. If I'm confused, how can I be clear in my teaching? Then I was introduced to LAND & WORD by Dr. Stephen Langfur.

WATCH THIS VIDEO WITH A FRIEND!

I did. Dr. Langfur answers questions that we had not yet thought to ask. And the
answers are so elegant and so simply formulated that we laugh with the joy of
discovery, and this continues with every viewing. Best of all, I can view this video, stopping - pausing - to refer back to Scripture and re-read a story that comes more alive because of what I understand from the video, and from tying it up with current events."History does not repeat itself without explaining itself," wrote George Adam Smith, "and the explanation is usually geographical." This principle pervades the film.

Given the background of Biblical geography, the scriptural themes come forth in all their power and universality, ancient and modern.

THIS IS THE BEST BUY I CAN IMAGINE......

FOR GUIDES, FOR TEACHERS: It is the heart and core of what our work should be with EVERYONE who visits the Holy Land.

FOR STUDENTS, FOR THE CURIOUS READER/VIEWER: The background which Dr. Langfur so deftly paints in words gives simple understanding to the most complex issues, and presents a 'text' that we can all understand even without the benefit of higher education, even without the benefit of walking the Land - indeed, without the benefit of sight: The visuals, maps and models are entrancingly helpful, but I shared the video with a sight-impaired colleague, and she listened to the text. His discussion is so clear and common-sensical - and he ties things together so well, with never a muddled sentence - that she said breathlessly: "It makes so much sense now!!!"

My own work is with many types of people: Christian pilgrims, interfaith groups, political tours, and Jewish groups, religious, secular and political. Until I found LAND & WORD, I never had one single resource that is so deep and yet can be so simply adapted to address their basic concerns and issues. Dr. Langfur takes us through the whole of Scripture right up to the drama and social mood that formed the world of Jesus of Nazareth.

Although the focus of LAND & WORD is on the background to Jesus' life, the film is for the Jewish viewer also, because that background was the time of the Second Temple.

LAND & WORD is a great tool for teaching Jews about the origins of Christianity and for teaching everyone else about the world into which Christianity was born!

Finally, for the Armchair Travelers, a good VCR can be the equal of a bus window, and a good imagination will take you right up a hill to look at the view with us, while Dr. Langfur explains exactly what we are seeing and which scriptures link with the site."

CAROL ANN BERNHEIM, Guide and teacher, Jerusalem

"I consider this a marvelous series for use in church and in Christian college settings. It offers a well-woven story that blends Biblical events with the history, archaeology, geography, and culture of the Near East. It is well and beautifully illustrated using a variety of visual media that will keep the rapt attention of professional as well as novice Bible students. Dr. Langfur's personal enthusiasm for the subject and the land is infectious for the viewer – it adds effervescent personality to his professional style."

GARY DUSEK, Professor of Old Testament, Westmont College

"Your comprehensive review of history is a grand foundation. I loved the photography and actually seeing those vistas and ruins where the familiar Biblical characters lived. The overriding conclusion I am left with is the historical and abiding connection between Christians and Jews. What a defense against bigotry this could be."

JEAN STAPLETON, Actress

"From the moment I tuned in I was mesmerized. Dr. Langfur has managed to present a text which is forthrightly honest and intelligent, yet simple to grasp and to feel. His multiple thematic developments carry through easily, with freshness and spontaneity. The interfacing of touring with study lectures is excellent. It is an outstanding product. Nothing I have seen approaches it."

J. DALE NYSTROM, President, IGM Tours

"Often I have been privileged to walk this land with Dr. Stephen Langfur, wishing that everyone who has a Bible could accompany us. Now, through this wonderful video, it is possible for individuals and study groups to share the insights of this phenomenal scholar, hiker and storyteller."

REV. LARRY GEORGE, First United Methodist Church, Sacramento

"As Dr. Langfur leads us through the centuries from Moses to Jesus, history becomes three-dimensional. We find real people grappling with real-life issues who consistently discover the extraordinary within the ordinary."

- ERIC E. ELNES, Ph.D. in Biblical Studies, Princeton Theological Seminary; Senior Pastor, United Church of Christ, Scottsdale, Arizona

"Stephen, I just spent a delightful 2-3 hours watching Land and Word for
the second time... I wanted to see it again so I could absorb what you were saying. It's very good. ...I've heard so many deal with these matters and describe them as contradictions in the text or as evidence of redactors sloppily compiling contradictory writings together. But your paradigm of the struggle to maintain the integrity of the covenant faith in the face of dissonant events ...unifies the material and defers to the integrity of the text....

"You did a great job. I think Land and Word would be an excellent
resource for Christian and Jewish groups who are interested in
improving mutual understanding."

- JAY BAGGETT, Geographer

"It (Land and Word) is a wonderful masterwork, containing the quintessence of all your thought processes. Again and again one becomes curious as to how these thoughts will develop, and one wants to put the film on 'pause' in order to consider them more deeply. The content, then, is wonderful, and your dramatic abilities come to the fore. The cameraman must have traveled with you quite a while in order to catch such characteristic moments."

DR. THILO FITZNER, Pedagogy and School Politics, Evangelische Akademie, Bad Boll, Germany.

"The video is excellent. It's one thing to have a depth of understanding of Israel, but another to be able to communicate the information in an effective and interesting manner to other people. You do that."
